DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY.
You just gained admission into the great Delta State University, Abraka. Your family was so excited and happy that they made sure you had a good meal before leaving home. With your big box of belongings and a folder full of files(and hope), you find yourself staring at the large eagle statue as you walk through the gates into the citadel of learning.
Given your chosen course of study, you struggle to get yourself together. You have to start paying your fees and getting familiar with the clearance and admission processes. As you walk down to the administrative block, you notice the big infrastructures and other students, staff or whoever may be, walking about and living out their own lives. You however, look around in a nervous glance. Excited yet scared, determined yet cautious about the adventure you're about to begin in Delta State University Abraka.
As you walk about, you begin to remember the extensive research you did about this prestigious university before you came. That Delta State University Abraka a.k.a DELSU was set up by the state government as an institution for learning and knowledge. That it initially started as a Government Teachers’ Training College during the colonial era and some years into the post-colonial era.
That it was at first affiliated to the University of Benin, Benin City and consequently offered degree Programs from 1981 till 1985 when it became the Faculty of Education of the then Bendel State University with its main campus at Ekpoma until the 30th of April, 1992 when Delta State University was separately established by Executive Governor of the state at the time, Olorogun Felix Ibru.
"DELSU has a lot of history." You thought as you looked at a food stall and saw some students buying food. Among the endless flow of students was a girl who had on a black and white dress. It immediately reminded you of Oleh Campus. Yes, DELSU has three campuses. One at Abraka, one at Asaba (Anwai) and one at Oleh. And among DELSU's 13 Faculties, 84 Departments and 83 Programs, Oleh Campus holds the reins of two facilities and they are Law and Engineering.
Unlike the busy, loud and extreme atmosphere at the main campus of DELSU, Oleh Campus is more serene, quiet and calm. With both faculties less than a mile from each other. In the heart of Isoko land, the big blue gates welcome one to the into law campus. Where most people are caught in the official act of wearing black and white. The surrounding is mostly green with gardens, trees, halls and hostels. Whereas the engineering faculty (which is just a bike fare of N200 away) has bigger infrastructures, workshops, a hall big enough to contain 1000 students and a large expanse of land. Truly a sight to behold.
Unlike the legal scholars, they don't wear uniforms rather they wear protective coveralls when it's time for projects, practical or anything of that sort.
Back to the moment, after asking around and spending some money on quick yet local transport, you finally get to the administrative block at Campus 2. After hours of waiting in line, sorting out your files, receipts, payments, dues and accommodation fees, making photocopies and printouts, going to various offices for one reason or the other, you tiredly head to a tuck shop and get a snack.
You realize that a drink that would normally cost N200 or at most N250 is around N500 in your beloved school. With no choice, you had to buy it along with an overpriced meat pie in order to satisfy your hunger.
"There are so many students." You thought to yourself as you walk to your hostel. You remember the last time you checked the school's student population and you saw a figure of 32,189 students. You begin to feel like a minute speck in the world of so many students but you are comforted by the fact that this is a whole new word and that you're ready to explore it.
You get to your hostel, you search around for your room. As you look at the walls, you see different posters and fliers. From church programs, to school events, to night parties, to Theatre Art shows and even motivational quotes and artworks on being a successful student. But the one that caught your eye the most was the informative post that showed the list of business owners and entrepreneurs in the hostel, the services they provided and their various rooms.
This struck you because it took your mind back to the campus at Asaba that you read about earlier. It was mostly known as the DELSU Business school.
The DELSU Business School, Asaba Centre, offers Postgraduate and Executive Programs leading to the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Doctor of Public Administration (DPA) and other Executive Doctoral Programs. Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA) and other
Executive Masters Program. Short-Term Diploma and Certificate Program.
As you get to your room, you meet your roommates. You are all four in a room. Your bed is at the side of the window, empty and a bit dusty. Two beds were occupied by two of your roommates, who were not freshers but were "stale students" in their respective fields of study. The last bed was empty, just like yours. "Maybe the person hasn't resumed or is a fresher just like me." You don't think much of it because you just had a long day and you needed to rest.
For you have just begun the journey of a lifetime at Delta State University, Abraka.
